To our parents, guardians, and other community members,

In anticipation of the opening of a new elementary school on 12th Street in Fall 2009, a committee of parents representing all elementary & middle schools has worked with school officials this winter and spring to develop a viable plan to revise elementary attendance boundaries. In this process, every attempt was made to maintain neighborhood school groups, minimize student time on buses, minimize the numbers of students moved, and prevent overcrowding at any school.

On May 16th, a proposal for the new elementary attendance boundaries was shared with the community for review and feedback.  The majority of the feedback focused on those neighborhoods switching between existing elementary schools, the reassignment of current Lake Center neighborhoods, and travel time to Woodland for those families on the eastern side of our district.

The committee met again to review these items, as well as the other feedback they received.  As a result, an alternate proposal has been prepared.  Details on this alternate proposal are available via the links at the top of this page.

We will continue to collect feedback on both the original and alternate proposals throughout the summer.

This fall, the study committee will reconvene to prepare its final recommendation to the Board of Education.  Once a plan is finalized, your elementary principal will share with you ways in which you and your family can participate in transition activities for your school.

We know that the welfare of your child is of utmost importance.  Continuing to provide quality instruction and support for all of our community’s children is important to us.  We value the trust you have placed in us in the past.  With over a year to plan for this transition, we will work closely with the affected families to address any concerns or challenges they face.  We all want the transition to a new school to be an exciting, positive experience.

Best wishes for a wonderful summer,

Marsha A. Wells
