March 15, 2010
Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grader that is interested in Swimming or Diving for the Portage Central Team should sign up in the front office by Wednesday. There will be an informational meeting in the little theatre Wednesday, March 17th right after school at 2:50. If you cannot make the meeting please see Coach O in the gym. If you wish to participate you do need a physical on file in the athletic office with Mr. Dunlop. If you have participated in any sport including Cross Country last fall – you are all set!
We have room for a few more Jeopardy Players. If you would like to join a team, stop and see Mrs. Sims after announcements. Permission slips are in homerooms this morning. Bring your permission slips back before or when you come to compete.
The Environmental Club is encouraging everyone at CMS to participate in our school’s recycling program. Every day this week we will talk about all the different items that can be recycled. By working together we can make our school, our community, and our world a better, greener place. So remember “BE SMART AND DO YOUR PART!!”
The winners of the Coke Drawing are Austen Ford, Jordan Bosier, Davis Kerr, and Sophia Lentz. Come and see the lunch ladies to claim your prize!
Track practice starts today. Meet in the Little Theatre at 3:00 p.m. All 7th and 8th graders are welcome, regardless if you signed up or not. Come and be a part of the successful program that has won 5 conference championships in the last 7 years.
Celebrate the Green Festal Week has begun! There are contest entries in folders surrounding the front office, the turn-in boxes are located inside the office. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the day today. We have four more puzzles and contest available today… that would be the Limerick contest, word scramble, crossword puzzle, and the Green Snake. Come and get them at anytime! All entries for the activities must be turned in inside the front office anytime this week before Thursday at 3:00. The wordsmith challenge and M&M’s for teachers is still available as well. The teachers have been in the mailroom, checking their mailboxes for M&M’s. You can enter for as many teachers as you would like! All other contests are strictly one entry per student. Make sure that you have your name and grade on everything you turn in – you cannot win if we don’t know your name! Also, how would you like to see some of your teachers with green hair and fingernails? Well here’s the deal: if the whole 6th grade goes without any office referrals for disruptive behavior for the whole day today, Mrs. Wydendorf and Ms. Chapman will be doing it up green tomorrow. If the whole 7th grade goes without any referrals for disruptive behavior today, Mrs. Franks and Mrs. Pullo will be decking it out tomorrow, and if the 8th grade goes without any referrals for disruptive behavior, Mrs. Collins and Mr. Juodawlkis will be donning the green. So you will have to work together as entire grade levels to make this happen. At the end of the day Mrs. Neal will announce which of those teachers need to report to her Beauty Salon first thing in the morning. Also, we are going to be going around and taking pictures this week and playing green music between classes, and we will have one class each day where the Get Up and Dance Green Song will be featured at the beginning of the hour. So have a great week, get involved and Go Green!

A note from Mrs. Yonker: To shrink our landfills even more, bring in your old cell phones to Room 18. These can be broken down and used for other purposes. Look in drawers you hardly ever open at home for old cell phones, they are more than welcome!
Teacher request forms are available in the counseling office by April 7th. Any requests are limited to the choice of one content area teacher per academic year. We will do our best to accommodate requests but a request id not a guarantee. Class size, availability of instructor, and other factors may impact our ability to honor the request.
The votes have been tallied and the results are in for the Breakfast Poster Contest. We had some awesome participation with over 200 posters collected between the elementary and secondary buildings. The competition was fierce and boy do we have a lot of talented students! The winners are Jordan Parks and Lukas Creed.

Congratulations to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade choirs on your AMAZING performance at District Choral Festival yesterday at Schoolcraft High School. You all received an excellent rating and an invitation to the State Choral Festival.
Here’s more ways to help save the environment: Most of us go through our fair share of ink cartridges, but most of us probably just throw them away afterward. However, ink cartridges can be recycled too. In Mrs. Yonkers room there’s a container for recycling ink cartridges, so take some time before or after school to deposit your used cartridges there.
Reminder to all of the Archery Team members: our last practice before the state tournament will be after school today. The tournament will take place next Monday. Next Monday the 6th graders will shoot in flight 1, right after school. 7th and 8th grade flight will be immediately afterwards around 4:15. If you know you cannot make it on Monday, please see Mr. Dunlop TODAY!

This is just a reminder about discipline procedures on the days of an after school party… We want to encourage all students to engage in their best behavior on special days. So in thinking along those lines, students who are suspended on the days of an after school party will not be allowed to attend. Additionally, students who are sent to the office on the day of the party with a discipline referral for classroom or hallway disruption will not be allowed to attend the party. Let’s all maintain a positive attitude so that the festivities can be enjoyed by everyone!
Happy Friday CMS! Another tip for a greener world: if you have Capri Sun pouches during lunch today, don’t throw them away! Even they can be recycled. Simply flatten them, take out the straw and deliver them to room 18 when you have the chance. Our school gets money for this, so if you participate, you can help the school and the environment!
