Our Portage Public Schools students are doing amazing things everyday in our classrooms and beyond!
February is Career and Technical Education month and we want to shine a spotlight on our talented students. Follow along with us this month as we highlight the high school students enrolled in a variety of CTE programs designed to help prepare them for their future careers.
Conservation Biology was the natural choice for Kaley Sheahan, a senior at Portage Central High School. Kaley completed the KRESA Conservation Biology course as a junior and has since interned multiple places including the Kalamazoo Nature Center and the Kalamazoo Conservation District.
Kaley is learning about the many facets of conservation biology including land management and agriculture, but her internships have also given her experiences working with animals, attending local town hall meetings and even running social media accounts.
"My favorite part of this course is experiencing so many different types of jobs within the field," she said. "In this area of work, it's competitive because it's a smaller industry, but through KRESA's program, I get to experience all types of jobs with professionals that have been doing this for a long time."
Kaley will study environmental science and justice at Calvin University in the fall, she said. Later, she hopes to continue her studies abroad in Africa.
