Our Portage Public Schools students are doing amazing things everyday in our classrooms and beyond!
February is Career and Technical Education month and we want to shine a spotlight on our talented students. As the month comes to an end, thank you for following along as we highlighted the high school students enrolled in a variety of CTE programs designed to help prepare them for their future careers.
The KRESA Construction Trades program is a great fit for two Portage students who love to work with their hands.
Gavynn Reincke and AJ Perkins, two Portage Northern High School students, said the class is laying the foundation for their future careers.
"I've always been really into construction, "AJ said. "My father's a construction worker. When I was younger I was building tree forts in my backyard."
AJ, a current senior, already has a post-graduation internship lined up to continue in the field.
For Gavynn, as a junior in high school, he enrolled in the construction program but also has interest in trying out other trades such as welding, he said.
"I like being hands-on, and I can't sit still for too long," he said. "I like having something to do with my hands and to watch the progress unfold on a project."
While in the program, the students have built a shed and helped to build an addition on an outbuilding at Schoolcraft Community Schools.
