Welcome to Portage Community High School
About Portage Community High School
Portage Community High School shares a campus on the corner of Milham and Oregon Avenue with Portage North Middle School and Portage Northern High School and creates a welcoming, family-like, supportive atmosphere for students who have not found success at a “traditional” high school but are still committed to their education. Students and parents can find community high by going to the back side of the Community Education/Curious Kids building at 1010 W. Milham.
Students at Community High School complete the same Michigan Merit Curriculum as all other students in the district. They use the same books and take the same assessments as students at Portage Northern and Portage Central, but what sets Community High school apart is block scheduling for credit recovery, small class sizes, and generous amounts of one-on-one interaction from the staff, who specialize in turning challenges into opportunities.
Community High School also promotes successful work and pre-college habits through extensive use of the Positive Behavior Support and Intervention program.
Community High School graduates receive a full Portage Public Schools high school diploma -not a GED- upon completion.
Twice Community High School has won “District of the Year” by the Michigan Alternative & Adult Education Association. Community High School also partners with several area organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, Portage Community Outreach Program and the Portage Rotary Club, to provide a wide variety of enrichment opportunities for our students.
We strive to create an environment of students and staff who are productive, engaged, and empowered to make positive choices.
Do you have a student who is not finding success in a traditional high school environment? Are they skipping class, failing classes, getting behind in credit, or simply feeling like they don’t “fit in”? Community High School can help. Our staff, who are highly trained in academic and behavior intervention and support, create a compassionate learning environment with daily one-on-one instruction that allows students to experience success and develop important social and academic skills.
Fall enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year starts in August. The first day of school is September 3. We are excited to meet with you and your student to see how we can make his/her dreams of attaining a Portage Public Schools high school diploma a reality.
