URSULA AND ARIEL

THE LITTLE MERMAID first burst onto the silver screen in 1989 and signaled the re-establishment of the musical film format as a standard for Disney animated films. Reviews were enthusiastic about the film and went on to win 2 Academy awards for Best Score and Best Original Song, “Under the Sea.” The Little Mermaid was adapted for the Broadway stage and opened in 2008. New songs were added, and more information about the beloved characters' pasts was revealed.

Little mermaid Ariel, (Ava Grunder) feels she is destined to live on land. Her father Triton, (Charlie Gross) King of the Sea, will not allow Ariel to go to the water’s surface. Triton’s evil sister, Ursula, (Nora Zemlick) the Sea Witch, makes a deal with Ariel and demands Ariel’s lovely voice in exchange for the opportunity to become human and explore the human world. With her amorous buddy Flounder (Ethan Steele), the dim-witted but loveable seagull Scuttle (Vincent Brow), the nervous crab Sebastian (Elijah Parker) and a new human love interest, Prince Eric (Noah Aiello) at her side, Ariel is able to discover whether or not she truly belongs “Under the Sea” or in “The World Above.”

Thematically, THE LITTLE MERMAID explores being heard and seen, listening to each other, choosing love over fear and releasing expectations. It’s more relevant than ever.

PN Drama's production of THE LITTLE MERMAID gives students another exciting opportunity to create a live theatre experience and share it with the Portage community.  Behind the scenes, this show utilizes student crew members  in all aspects of this production; from costumes, props, makeup/hair, set production, lighting/sound and flight crew.  This is the first PN production in many years to feature student crew members "flying" select characters above the stage as an integral part of the performance.
