two characters in the Little Mermaid on stage

Portage Northern High School’s Drama Department is excited to offer a sensory-friendly matinee showing of their musical “The Little Mermaid.”

The musical, which opened Friday, Nov. 10, is Portage Northern’s own rendition of the classic Disney tale about growing up, belonging and finding your voice.

The sensory-friendly showing at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, will be different from a typical performance to accommodate those with sensitivities to bright lights or loud noises. Accommodations include lower sound and light levels, sensory supports such as fidgets and headphones, and a quiet space in the lobby.

The performance will also include an American Sign Language interpreter.

Auditorium technicians will remove strobe lights and keep the house lights at a low level throughout the performance. Audience members are also welcome to stand, move around and come and go from the lobby as needed throughout the musical.

If desired, audience members are also welcome to bring their own fidgets, seat cushions, comfort objects, headphones, electronics, and other support items to the show.

As always, food is not welcome inside the auditorium, but attendees are welcome to bring snacks to enjoy in the lobby.

Other showtimes include: November 17 & 18 at 7:30 p.m. and November 19 at 2 p.m.
