For over 20 years now we have been raising money for our friends at the Tuleeni Orphanage. Tuleeni is located in Moshi, Tanzania, on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The orphanage was founded by Mama Faraji, a teacher herself, who began to care for orphans, starting from her home to creating one big “home” to increase the growth and development of the children.
When PN Graduate Josh Kieser visited the orphans at Tuleeni after graduation, their joy and enthusiasm for learning influenced him. He came back with a humbled heart and strong desire to help. That is how the idea for $2-gether for Tuleeni began: By each student and staff member donating a seemingly small amount, Portage Northern can collectively make an incredible difference. When we began supporting Tuleeni, there were only about 30 students at Tuleeni, and now there are over 100! Through other donations, they now have new, larger living space for the children.
Education in Tanzania is lacking, as more than 32 million children remain uneducated around the region. $2-gether for Tuleeni truly offers these children a better future. We keep a continued relationship with Mama Faraji and these children, writing letters and donating money regularly. We see students go off to college, while others get into better schools and many step foot into their first classroom, all due to the money that this school raises.
What can you do to help? Interact will be collecting money each day during 7th hour, March 11-15th. Our hope is that every student and staff could contribute at least $2 to help support the kids in Tuleeni. As an additional incentive for the students, we are awarding the top earning 7th hour with a pizza party on a date of their choosing!
This year we will be selling T-shirts for $12 and all proceeds go directly to Tuleeni. We will have a spirit day on Friday, March 15th to wear the shirts or green to show our support of the kids in Tuleeni Children's home. T-shirts are being sold before / after school.
We are excited to show Tuleeni our huskie support #PACKSTRONG! Please feel free to reach out to gderenne@portageps.org with questions.
