Our Daily Announcements to our students

This morning one of our former students from about 10 years ago stopped in to visit with me. I have known him and his family for a long time; he also lives not far from me and we say “hi” to each on my early-morning runs. After he visited with me, he left Portage Central but stayed near his car in our student parking lot, playing music loudly and using drumsticks on his car, which was disruptive to our educational environment. So we went into a lock-up, securing all of the outside doors and limiting our movement around campus. Again, we have known this individual for a long time – and we don’t take chances.

We called the Portage Police and they responded very promptly. They know our former student as well, and they interacted with him very appropriately and led him off campus and away from Portage Central. At that time we lifted the security measures that we put in place, and we are working with the Portage Police so that he does not come onto school property again.

We are so grateful for our kids and colleagues; they handled this disruption with care and thoughtfulness. We appreciate the folks who reached out to us, just to make sure we all were okay. And we are thankful to the Portage Police; in all of the 31 years I have been blessed to serve here they have responded with professionalism and compassion – so that all of our kids are safe and feel safe.

As always, if you have thoughts or questions, reach out to me anytime.

So grateful for our entire community,

Eric Alburtus
