A reminder of guidelines on community service hours
All community service hours must be served in person with a non-profit organization. We are fortunate to have so many local non-profit organizations that do terrific work for members of our community -- and they need our help. Thatās why we want to do everything we can as a school to support them -- and thatās what our community service hours and recognitions are all about. Only hours of service done for non-profit organizations count toward PC recognitions, such as our academic awards programs, our National Honor Society, and our International Baccalaureate curriculum, to name only a few. Service hours can only be authorized by an adult directly affiliated with the activity and not a relative. (Sorryā¦ PC students cannot be the authorizing adult.)
Additionally, service forms must be submitted to Mr. Brown in room 1133 (Welcome Center or Main Office if Mr. Brown is unavailable) no later than four weeks from the date of the service hours. Example: Service date October 1 must be turned in by October 29. Click here for information on our Community Service Award and service form. If you have questions, please contact our community service coordinator, Rob Brown, at rbrown@portageps.org.
Want to learn more about teen substance misuse?
Portage Public Schools and the countyās Health Department are teaming up for a presentation on Monday, November 18 at 6:30 at West Middle School. Hit this link to read the flier more easily (especially for my old-man eyes).
Is your student responsible and great with kids?
Then have them join Woodland Helpers! Woodland Helpers is a service-hours opportunity that occurs every Wednesday after school from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Woodland Helpers is a tutoring program for elementary students at Woodland Elementary, that aims to help the children academically, while simultaneously building a mentorship relationship between the high school student and the elementary student. This program ran smoothly last school year with great feedback from both Woodland Students and PCHS Mentors and we are hoping to expand this opportunity for more mentors for the current school year. If your child is interested or has any questions, please have them contact Sophia Loso at sophia.loso@portageps.org or Olin Rohrstaff at olin.rohrstaff@portageps.org
